Public Records in Obion County Bankruptcy Cases

Federal bankruptcy records are public by law. Under 11 U.S.C. Section 107, all papers filed in a bankruptcy case are open to the public unless a specific court order seals them. Most consumer cases in the Western District are fully open. The standard documents, petition, schedules, statements, and orders, are all available through PACER.

The case file begins with the voluntary petition. Schedules A through J follow and detail all assets, debts, income, and monthly expenses. The Statement of Financial Affairs covers recent transactions, lawsuits, and property transfers. Each of these documents is public. As the case moves forward, trustee reports, creditor claims, and court orders are added to the docket.

Sensitive personal data is redacted before documents are posted online. Social Security numbers appear as last four digits only. Financial account numbers are masked. This is automatic under court rules. No separate redaction request is needed. The version available in PACER already has this data removed.

Tennessee's open records law at T.C.A. Section 10-7-503 applies to state and local government records, not federal court files. For bankruptcy access, you follow federal rules, not state public records law.

Chapter 11 is available for businesses and complex individual cases. The $1,717 fee reflects the more involved process. All chapter types generate public case records.
